23rd March 2022 / Sarah Lowry: Mark & Nick Fletcher: An Interview

What is your earliest and/or fondest memory of growing up in a real estate family?

MARK: My earliest memories would have to be riding my bike with my brother to the North Balwyn Office, getting some coins and heading on up to the local lolly shop. That and observing the respect my dad and uncle had for my grandfather as their mentor.

NICK: It actually makes me laugh! Having to be quiet in the backseat when dad took work phone calls, which after having worked at home for the best part of 2 years my daughters have learnt to understand quite well too.

When did you join the business, and was it always something you intended to do?

MARK: Out of school, I wanted to follow a different path. I am quite practical and love being outdoors, so I took up landscaping. It turned out to give me great design insight, what works well in terms of both living in and preparing a home for sale. I then got some experience in commercial Real Estate, but it didn't take long to find my way back home to the family business.

NICK: I wasn't sure if I'd follow in my dad, grandfather & great grandfather's footsteps - I wanted to travel and further my knowledge before making that decision. I completed a Bachelor of Business and pursued my interest in sports marketing, working at the Melbourne Racing Club for almost 3 years before settling into the North Balwyn office which now feels very much like home, early in 2010.

What other passions play a role in your life?

MARK: My little girl is the most important thing in my life, and I am enjoying helping her grow her happy and loving little nature. Second to that, I take great pride in my collection of motorbikes and play both Lacrosse & Basketball with a great group of mates.

NICK: My beautiful wife and I are enjoying raising two little ladies, who bring us such joy. We are currently restoring an old heritage home together and outside of that you will find me on the golf course, supporting the Hawks or in Mount Martha with family and friends.

What was the best piece of advice your Dad gave you about working in the industry?

MARK: My grandfather, Fafa, once told me 'Don't ever lie to anyone. Just say it how it is.'

NICK: He's given me lots over the years, and continues to be such a great sounding board, however, to 'just be myself and surround yourself with people who will challenge your thinking and keep you inspired' is probably something that really stuck with me.

How has the industry evolved since you first started?

MARK: Especially post covid, its propelled our industry forward enormously. Enabling buyers to secure property from anywhere in the world, has kept the buoyancy in our market for the best part of 2 years.

NICK: Naturally, the advancement of technology, the disrupters (Covid), more market competition. All three of these developments have propelled us forward and resulted in positive outcomes as an industry.

What do you hope to see for the future of Fletchers?

MARK: I'd like to play an active part in ensuring my dad, uncle and grandfathers legacy is secured for the next 100 years. I am extremely proud to be taking on a leadership role within our group, we have a wonderful team of Directors, staff and external community, it's an exciting time to be working in Real Estate.

NICK: I hope to see many, many more generations of growth for the business. We have such a wonderful network of real estate professionals who are experts in their field, committed to their clients and connected to their colleagues; so I hope we are destined for at least that.

Would you encourage your children to pursue a real estate career?

MARK: Sure, if it's something she felt a passion for. However, like every father wishes for their daughters, you get one shot at this life, so pursue something you love or find the courage to step away and start again. She'll always have my support no matter what she decides.

NICK: Ten years ago, probably not, as I don't think the pathways or role models for women to succeed within the industry were there. However, I now think there are some wonderful women in leadership positions that young girls can aspire to, which is important. We have come a long way regarding gender parity for working women/mothers etc, and if our girls end up coming into the family business, there will be great opportunity for them thanks to the women who have paved the way before.
