2nd June 2020 / Prue Fletcher: How to Achieve Emotional Balance in Business

Just as the infamous domestic saying goes, 'leave your baggage at the door', so too was that expected of you in the boardroom.

However, as more research suggests, emotions harnessed in the right way can actually be advantageous in business. For centuries, employees have been encouraged to bring only their most considered selves; the self-aware version which boasts only positive emotions to the office.

These days, however, this is becoming increasingly untenable. For some time now, technology has continued to the lines between our work and personal lives. Add a dose of COVID-19 and our new remote working environments to the mix and soon enough you're asking yourself which is the right or wrong side of the bed, let alone the boardroom.

Luckily, there is now a greater understanding of how the negative impact of burying your emotions, in contrast to the positive impact of applying these skillfully, can benefit your overall performance.

It is now a requirement for brands and businesses to connect with people emotionally in order to succeed. These innate skills (the ones you can't teach), like being able to close deals with empathy or lending a set of ears in tough times, provides more than a few reasons why embracing your emotions can be highly desirable at the negotiating table.
