As we will all be aware, India experienced an unprecedented second wave of Covid-19 earlier this year, as the total virus caseload topped 20 million.
We know their hospital system was stretched beyond its limits and there were dire shortages in the country's expanded vaccine drive, but what a lot of us didn't know is how we could help...
In support of Fletchers Indian colleagues, families, friends and our wider community, we sought to stand in solidarity in what was truly a global disaster and required a global response.
Together with Fletchers Warrandyte Senior Associate, Dominic Cruz, we were given an opportunity to make a small difference to the situation at ground level.
A Fletchers Scholarship was set up to help raise much needed funds, which will ensure children left orphaned or severely disadvantaged from Covid-19, still have access to a basic education.
Covid-19 has destroyed numerous homes and families, and many able bodied wage-earners' have lost their battle to the virus leaving behind a vulnerable population of young children who now need aid in their educational and day to day needs.
St Joseph's Boys High School (which is where Fletchers Warrandyte Senior Associate, Dominic Cruz attended his schooling) is a 125+ year institution and is educating thousands of young men (and now women) to go forth with the motto of 'Service and Giving Back'.
Many students at St Josephs are in dire need of help at various levels, be it tuition fees, books, uniforms, transport, mid-day meals and so on.
While our team was also at home in lockdown, they answered the call, and an internal fundraiser was set up in the hope to make a real difference in real time. As an act of kindness, Fletchers Directors agreed to make a significant contribution alongside all donations received and wish to pay our respects to the millions of people affected, but more importantly those directly affected within our Fletchers Family.
We want to extend our sincere gratitude to our whole team for their generous contributions and help in getting our Fletchers Scholarship off the ground. The funds raised will go directly to and have a major impact in ensuring the vulnerable children at St Josephs High School have access to what should be a right of passage in our modern day world.
We look forward to updating you along the journey.
