1st November 2018 / Beth Oleyar: Beauty Tips for Spring Racing

Luisa Curcio is a qualified beauty therapist with over 6 years industry experience in waxing, tanning, tinting, threading, make-up application and microdermabrasion facials. We've asked Luisa for industry tips and tricks for achieving your best look over the Spring Racing season.

What are some of the overall trends you've noticed with make-up application for Spring Racing over the last few years?
I'd say it's more natural but glamorous. Soft neutral eyes, maybe a bold lip, but nothing over the top.
What sort of make-up techniques work best in broad daylight? Or what would you avoid?
I'd say don't go too heavy on the highlighter. In the evenings it can work wonders, but during the day it can look a bit full on. I would suggest using a cream highlighter during the day as it looks more natural but still gives you that nice glow. Definitely don't go heavy on the eyes. Make sure you use a setting spray to hold your make up in place to make sure it lasts throughout the event.

When it comes to prepping before Race Day, what treatments or techniques would you recommend?
I'd suggest getting a microdermabrasion for your face because it just gives such a good exfoliation. That way when you go to do your make up, it looks flawless and you don't have a build-up of dry skin. I would also recommend doing a hydrating mask twice a week leading up to the event. On the day of the races, you are likely to be drinking, so you're going to be dehydrated. Plump up your skin as much as you can before the event. Also remember before you get a spray tan, make sure you rub lotion into any dry areas of your skin such as your knees, ankles and elbows so those areas don't get too dark.

What lipstick and eye colours are trending for Spring Racing?
I've noticed a lot of clients getting bold red lips. If you're doing a red lip, go softer on the eyes, because your main statement is your lips. You've also got that more classic look with the more apricot tones and soft pinks, which is timeless.

What is the number 1 beauty product that you keep with you at all times?
Oh my god I can't choose one! I do always keep Napoleon Camera Finish Powder with me. For skin that gets quite oily, it's great to touch up your face with a powder throughout the day.

What would be your biggest tip for making sure your make-up compliments your outfit?
I don't necessarily believe in matching an eyeshadow to your outfit. I prefer to do a tone that goes with your outfit rather than using the same colour.

I always love to see what people are wearing before or on the day of the appointment, just so I can get an overall idea of the look they're going for and then make suggestions if needed.

Talk us through the make-up style you performed on Prue Fletcher for Spring Racing.
We went with a neutral-eye using soft pink and brown tones and a natural-looking fake eyelash. I did a smoked-out liner, nothing too heavy, just for subtle definition. Prue was looking for that bronzed highlighter look, so we went for a really soft glow on the cheekbones, which was a nice sun-kissed look.

Any final tips to share?
I always start with the eyes first, that way you don't have to worry about having to clean up any eyeshadow fall-out on your face!
