AUTUMN SHADES

The changing of seasons, a time for transition, and the perfect excuse to elevate your interior decorating.

When the leaves turn golden and the temperature drops, the harsher elements of the next few months can often leave us feeling a little exposed and raw, so it's a time where we should all nestle down and nurture our souls, and it all starts in the home.

As we begin to welcome Autumn's tell-tale signs; crisp mornings, tonal shades and country aromas cooking on the stove, it's hard to believe just a few weeks ago we felt the intense heat of an unusually warm Easter weekend.

Here's our guide to transitioning your home from Summer to Autumn:

  1. Add some layers
Perfect for curling up with on the couch, or as an extra textured piece on the bed, extra a throw is a stylish and versatile way to cosy up any room. Adding a basket with some extra throws to a room can really elevate a slow Friday night at home as well.

  2. Introduce a new colour
Taking a seasonal approach and being guided by nature always bodes well when transitioning between seasons and Autumn really allows us to play with colour palette. Whether forest green or golden yellows, bring in some branches from outside and inject some colour through greenery. Cooking and hosting dinner parties this time of year is always fun and serving the meal with colourful cutlery and crockery make every meal a party!

  3. Switch out the summery scents for spicy notes
A trick which is both easy to do and a cost-effective way of updating your home for the change of season. Essential oils this time of year add an extra earthiness to your home and switching out the 'coconut & lime' for scents like sandalwood, bergamot & ylang-ylang.

  4. Embrace mood lighting
Light is a powerful thing. It has the ability to transform a room by lifting the mood, inspiring productivity and at times add a level of warmth which can comfort us. The right light can awaken the soul — bringing to life our morning routines or intimate moments spent with family & friends. Experts often comment that more than one source of lighting is needed in a room, so aim to achieve a layered approach. Illuminate each room with a mixture of lighting including overhead, accent, and task lights.

  5. Texture, texture, texture!
Instead of cotton sheets on the bed, why not transition to something with a little more weight such as linen. Adding a textured throw such as a knit or switching in a velvet cushion will also add another cosy dimension.
