Although we may have long said goodbye to balmy nights spent outdoors, it doesn't mean we should go into hibernation too – because let's face it, we've all spent WAY too much time indoors over the past 12 months!
When designing backyards, taking a multi-seasonal approach should be top of mind. Whether it's a cool September night spent cooking the barbie whilst watching the footy, long overdue catch ups with friends or letting the kids stay up a little past their bedtime to enjoy a toasted marshmallow (or three), it's evident that our outdoor spaces are an area of our homes that should be enjoyed all-year-round!
Here's some ways to help you get the most out of your outdoor space this Winter.
Light up the sky
Melbournians love the outdoors...you only have to think of Melbourne's bustling restaurant scene – need I say more?!
When designing your landscape lighting plan, the right lighting will literally give life to the outdoors when the sun goes down and keep the party moving late into the evening! Some things to consider when curating your outdoor space:
- Illuminating the garden space to cleverly accentuate key greenery
- Ensuring safe navigation through well-lit pathways
- Smartly lit areas which set the tone of your external living zones
Soft & hard furnishings
Investing in quality outdoor furniture can make a big difference in what maintenance is required to keep it looking good year on year and whether you need to bring it under cover over the winter months. It is worth selecting soft furnishings that are specifically designed for outdoor elements with labels such as UV, mould and water resistant enabling your fabrics to continue to stand the test of time.
Take Cover
Protection from the elements is an important factor to consider at any time of year. However, as humans we require sunlight to help regulate our mental and emotional moods. Did you know that we get our Vitamin D through sun exposure and absorb it even though the sun is not as warm in the winter, so having an outdoor area which can be used all-year round is extremely important when considering your landscaping plan and the overall health of you and your family.
Fire in the belly
When the sun goes down, you really can't beat watching the flames dance in a night sky. Whether it's a roast on the spit to feed the masses, a firepit or heat lamp to help warm the toes, an outdoor heat source not only helps keep you warm but has many positive social and emotional health benefits too such as decreasing stress hormones and reducing blood pressure.
Have a happy and safe Winter!
