20th May 2009: Space Savvy

In the past Australians have opted for sprawling lawns and large thirsty gardens. It is possible however, to embrace higher density living and smaller backyards without compromising your lifestyle. Whether you own an inner-city apartment for work trips, or have permanently downsized, you can still create a stylish space where you can entertain friends and relax without feeling confined.

The most important consideration is that where space is limited, everything needs to earn its place. Don't use two where one will do, especially when it comes to chairs and tables. This spatial savvy thinking should also extend outdoors to your balcony or courtyard. With fewer metres to play with, try fine furniture in aluminium or cane, and add a compact portable barbecue you can configure to suit the situation.

As far as decorating goes, simplicity is key. A cluttered outdoor area will shrink further with every added piece of furniture. And besides, minimalism is stylish, smart and easier on the hip pocket.
