The window of a real estate office has a special lure for holidaymakers. For most of the year people give no thought to buying a getaway pad. But during January, in that sleepy town with its sparkling beach, they can think of nothing else.

When many city agents are taking a breather, their coastal brethren are at their busiest, fielding inquiries from visitors with sandy feet and sunburn. However, while many are happy to look, agents say buyers are thin on the ground this year.

Holiday homes may have dropped in price considerably since the global financial crisis but they're still a discretionary purchase. Most people are trying to focus on whittling the mortgage on their main city residences.

However, what if you could wake to a view of the waves for a fraction of what it costs to buy the house?
