1st March 2011: Natural Selection

Summer has seemingly given way early this year to the chill of autumn and winter, but it doesn't mean you need to forego the pleasures of the outdoors.

Turning your living or sitting room into a tranquil, light-filled garden observatory can be as easy as changing the furniture, removing the curtains or blinds, and perhaps tweaking the flooring. To blend the indoors with the external environment, a natural floor surface such as timber is ideal, while stone is also a great option.

Furnishing should appear incidental, so avoid bright, synthetic hues and ultra-contemporary styles in favour of classis shapes and a tonal palette. Not only will a fawn or winter white chaise merge seamlessly with its surroundings, it won't fade in the warm winter sun.

To really set the tone for a serene chilly season, equip your space with a sound system and keep a forest soundtrack on stand-by.
