30th November 2010: Branching Out

Think big. Update your garden with easy-care trees.

Well planted trees not only boost the value of your property, they also lift the spirit, give an outdoor focus point and encourage birdlife. Even small spaces look better with a cleverly planted tree or two – try an olive tree in a big, terracotta pot for a knockout effect.

Or for something different, try espaliered branches (trees grown flat against a feature wall) with lemon or pear trees.

One of the most popular trees at the moment is the Magnolia grandiflora. Known for its sensual white flowers and divine fragrance, is one of the most popular trees in Melbourne at the moment for a fence border. Equally popular are Manchurian pears (a cool climate favourite with heart-shaped leaves and scented flowers), willow trees and olive trees, which lend a lovely Italian air to a garden.

The Silver Birch is also frequently spotted in gardens throughout the metropolitan area. Given its sleek white trunk and soft foliage, it works well with most home styles.

Ornamental pears are big, as are crepe myrtles and olives, which are both drought-tolerant, another important factor.

If you're using a pot for a tree, be sure to buy a large one so that the tree can 'grow into' it, and ensure the pot has a good-sized drainage hole. To keep your tree happy and healthy for the long run, fertilise and water it frequently, and prune it back in winter.
