Malvern Suburb Profile Information

One of Melbourne’s more desirable inner south-eastern suburbs, Malvern is located 8km south east of the city. A residential suburb, Malvern is bounded to the north and east by Gardiner’s Creek and in the south by Dandenong Road. The name Malvern arose from the Malvern Hill Estate, a number of private lots sold by barrister Charles Skinner, in 1856.

Malvern experienced rapid urbanisation from the turn of the century, becoming a city in 1911. From the 1920’s, the Malvern Council promoted the planning of street trees, and insisted on minimum housing block sizes of 6,000 sq ft with 50 ft frontages. The subdivision of farms and estates followed and substantial villas, many designed by Victoria’s best known architects, began to fill the newly created curving streets and avenues. In 1995 Malvern became a part of the City of Stonnington.

Malvern residents and visitors can enjoy its many restaurants and cafes, the upmarket shopping strip of Glenferrie Road, Malvern Central Shopping Centre and Malvern Village.

The suburb offers a wonderful environment to raise a family, featuring several schools – most notably Little St Margarets, St Joseph’s Primary School, Malvern Primary School, Malvern Central School and De La Salle College.

Malvern is also home to several parks and gardens, including Malvern Gardens, Kooyong Park, Malvern Cricket Ground, Milton Gray Reserve, Sir Robert Menzies Reserve, and Tooronga Park.
