Renowned for its undulating tree-lined streets, Sassafras is a stunning eastern suburb located 43 kilometres east of Melbourne’s CBD. Home to a small population of just over a thousand people, the many parks and reserves have seen nature artfully fuse into an exceptional residential environment.
The area was once named Sassafras Gully, after the trees which grew nearby. Land was cleared for small scale farming in the late 1800’s and the small township has been steadily growing since ever since. Today, Sassafras is a well-known tourist destination within the Dandenong Ranges, with many people travelling to the area for the Devonshire tea outlets, antique shops and nurseries.
Sassafras is between the Yarra River Catchment and the Dandenong Creek. Both the Dandenong Creek and Sassafras Creek provide important water corridors which are protected by parklands.
Families have a selection of schools to choose from in the suburbs surrounding Sassafras and homes in the area are often off the main road and built to take advantage of the spectacular views on offer.
