Barwon Heads is a popular holiday destination for Geelong and Melbourne residents with Geelong being a convenient 20km down the road and Melbourne a casual 100km journey away. Originally a fishing village at the mouth of the Barwon River, Barwon Heads has been able to retain much of its early village character despite the rapid growth in its permanent population (3,000 in 2006).

Filming of the television series "Seachange" created new awareness of Barwon Heads. The township offers a wonderful choice of views and leisure activities - safe swimming and boating in the Barwon River, surf beaches to the west, bird watching and fishing upstream, golf at one of Australia's finest courses and Bluff Lookout with magnificent views across Bass Strait.

Due to the limited supply of flood-free land for residential development, demand has pushed home site prices over $300,000. Houses for sale in Barwon Heads can cost anywhere between $500,000 and $2 million. Caravan and camping grounds surround the township. The many holiday homes, vacant for much of the year, spring into life during peak holiday seasons.

The shopping centre is small and primarily caters for immediate needs. Weekly shopping can be done in Ocean Grove or Geelong.

Farmland, wetlands and golf courses surround the township. Access to the region is via Barwon Heads Road from Geelong. Cross the bridge to Ocean Grove and the rest of Bellarine Peninsula beyond opens up more touring and leisure options.
