South Melbourne Real Estate and Suburb Profile

Known as Emerald Hill before the 1850's gold rush, South Melbourne emerged as mixture of mansions, workers cottages and shipping, distribution and industrial enterprises. Emerald Hill is now a local zone nestled around the Town Hall. Most heavy industry has since gone.

Much of the northern part of the suburb was annexed to form the newer Melbourne suburbs of Southbank and South Wharf. The area now reaches St Kilda Road in the East. Albert Park with its fabulous lake forms its southern border while Port Melbourne separates it from the Yarra and Port Phillip Bay. The suburb includes the area known as Montague.

Property redevelopments in recent years have led to a rapid growth in multi-level units and apartments in South Melbourne. With Melbourne CBD just 2 km away, excellent tram connectivity, ready access to open spaces including Albert Park Lake Reserve and its public golf course, the Bay, and good local shops, South Melbourne is a most appealing suburb to live. Today, the suburb roughly consists of houses and units.

Despite its rapidly expanding population, South Melbourne has been able to retain much of its village-style character and heritage buildings – especially around the Emerald Hill precinct.

Clarendon Street remains the main convenience shopping centre for local residents. However, the suburb has a unique shopping destination that draws thousands of tourists and distant shoppers: the South Melbourne Market.

The South Melbourne Market in Coventry Street is an open fresh food market – an institution for more than 130 years. Today, it also promotes gourmet tours and seasonal night-time markets where vendors sell clothing, jewellery and home wares. A market cooking school opened in July 2010.

Apart from a Catholic Regional Primary school, residents place their primary children in nearby State Schools. Premier State secondary schools are, however, within easy reach. Mac Robertson Girls High School is just across Albert Road, Melbourne Boys High School is within 3 km while Melbourne Grammar School is over St Kilda Road.

South Melbourne offers location, facilities, character and a lifestyle to be enjoyed by old and new residents alike.
