New hospitals and a direct rail service to the city were the initial catalysts for home building in Macleod. The State Government established the Mont Park, Macleod Repatriation and Plenty hospitals in Macleod after WW1. Army Barracks were located at Watsonia after WWII, sparking the second wave of new housing development to accommodate service personnel. Until recently, Macleod was considered a fully-settled residential suburb. Another land release in Macleod West has resulted in more, new large homes.
Macleod therefore offers a range of homes styles. Recent house sales show that Macleod real estate is still within the reach of first home buyers.
Macleod is 16 km and 30 minutes by road from Melbourne CBD via Eastern Freeway. The Metropolitan Ring Road is a few kilometres to the north. While the suburb does not have its own local shopping centre, the Greensborough Plaza Shopping Centre is a short drive away. A bus service connects the suburb to other nearby stations, to Latrobe University by its western boundary, RMIT University campuses in Bundoora, and the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg.
While Macleod no longer has its own primary school, there are plenty close by. Macleod College provides secondary education for local students as well as students from nearby suburbs.
Sporting facilities and open areas are popular attractions for people looking to invest in Macleod real estate.
