An inner suburb of Melbourne, Richmond is located only 2km east from the CBD. Since the early 1990s, the suburb has been transformed by urban renewal and development. Richmond was socially reinvented, with the long lasting industry and manufacturing moving out, and middle-class Melbourne discovering the charms of inner-city living and Victorian architecture. Now Richmond contains a mix of converted warehouse residences, public housing high-rise flats, Victorian-era terrace houses, and some industrial landmarks that have become luxury apartments.
Richmond has an abundance of shopping opportunities, with the bustling strips of Victoria Street, Swan Street and Bridge Road, which offers several factory outlet stores and is a popular attraction. Built in 2001, the Victoria Gardens Shopping Centre is a large modern complex servicing the inner eastern suburbs, and includes Victoria's only, and very popular Ikea store. Richmond is also well-known for being the home of the Nine Network studios, as well as the vibrant "Little Saigon" area of Victoria Street.
Richmond has good educational services, with three high schools – St. Kevin's College (Waterford Campus), Lynall Hall Community School and Melbourne Girls' College. The primary schools include Richmond Primary, Richmond West Primary School, and Yarra Primary School.
There are several sporting and recreational facilities, and is home to the AFL's Richmond Football Club, one of the longest surviving league teams. AFL games played at the nearby MCG often attract crowds up to 80,000 people when competition is fierce. There are several avenues of transport available in Richmond, with five train stations, seven tram routes, a bus service and several bicycle trails.
